[words on STEALING THINGS by KEEGAN CRAWFORD]
*
Keegan Crawford just ‘released’ a new ebook
called ‘Stealing Things’
as w/ other books in which the first page is the ‘credits’ I read the titles as a poem
& enjoyed it
I enjoy the brevity of this chapbook
do I enjoy brief things because I have some form of ADD?
do I enjoy brief things because ‘technology’ & convenience have ‘conditioned’ me to expect it?
do I enjoy brief things because, like Twitter, they harness the power of condensed language?
Keegan Crawford definitely utilizes brevity ‘all the way through’
except maybe w/ the titles
which seems to be a theme in ‘alt lit’
short poems w/ long titles
I find pleasure in this phenomenon
Keegan ‘speaks of’ mundane settings throughout
& a certain yearning for ‘transcendence’ (even if often shrouded in irony)
this ‘sheaf’ of poems often cultivates humor
I think being able to balance / integrate humor in poetry is outstanding
the speaker here is very ‘self aware’ of his own ‘speaking’
as in finishing a poem w/ 3 explosions in it w/: ‘There were three explosions in this poem’
the poem abt his imagined funeral is great: ‘One of those movie scenes where someone sinks entirely into the water in a bathtub’
beginning w/ ‘I want a nervous person to speak at my funeral’
& having surprising, vivid lines like: ‘I want to be cremated when I die / because have a fear or waking in my coffin’
like many ‘alt lit’ writers, he seems to be preoccupied w/ death
(as the cover suggests ?)
& more specifically, he speaks playfully abt death
‘Nocturnal’ is a word that makes me feel / like I’m sitting in a forest with my eyes closed, / listening to noises / which all sound like / something is coming to kill me’
other favorite moments:
‘There was a sound in the background that sounded like / paper rubbing together, quietly’
‘Color my entire body with an industrial sharpie marker / so I can walk around at night / without anyone noticing // I want to be invisible / while still being visible’
‘For a little bit, —— felt like he would never die’

I look forward to reading anything Keegan ‘puts out’ next
